Sunscreen & SPF

Sunscreen is the single most important step in any active skincare routine - and the one thing that protects everything else you are doing. We do not make a sunscreen yet, so here is how to choose a clean one and use it well, because the results you are paying for genuinely depend on it.

Why it is non-negotiable with actives

Vitamin C, retinoids, exfoliating acids, and brighteners all work by renewing your skin and speeding up its cell turnover. That is exactly why daytime sun protection matters more once you start using them, not less: fresh, active skin is more vulnerable to UV, and UV attacks the very things these serums are working to build. A broad-spectrum SPF every morning is what lets the rest of your routine actually show results.

What happens if you skip it

This is the part worth taking seriously. Skipping sunscreen after your serums does not just waste them - it can undo them, and in some cases move your skin backwards.

  • Dark spots get worse. UV is the single biggest trigger of the excess pigment behind dark spots and melasma. Use a brightener like C20 FADE or V09 ERASE without daily SPF and you are fading pigment with one hand while the sun deepens it with the other. This is the number one reason people never see results from a brightening routine.
  • Firming and anti-aging work is undone. A large majority of visible skin aging - fine lines, loss of firmness, uneven tone - is driven by sun exposure. Building collagen with peptides or a retinoid while skipping SPF is effort spent straight into a headwind.
  • Freshly resurfaced skin can burn. Retinoids like V15 SHIFT and exfoliating acids like V20 PEEL and V17 QUELL raise your skin's sensitivity to the sun. Without protection, that means a real, increased risk of irritation, redness, and actual sunburn on the newly revealed skin underneath.

Think of it like filling a bucket with a hole in the bottom. Your serums pour results in; unprotected sun exposure drains them right back out. Sunscreen plugs the hole - and without it, much of what you are paying for leaks away.

How to choose a clean one

Not all sunscreens are created equal, and many of the most common ones lean on exactly the kind of ingredients we refuse to formulate with. Here is the standard we would hold a sunscreen to - the same logic behind everything on our What We Exclude list.

Look for:

  • Mineral filters - zinc oxide, ideally non-nano, on its own or paired with titanium dioxide. These sit on the surface and physically block UV.
  • Broad-spectrum, SPF 30 or higher - so you are covered against both UVA (aging) and UVB (burning).
  • Fragrance-free and essential-oil-free - for the same reason our serums are: fragrance is a leading cause of irritation, and active skin is more reactive than most.

Avoid:

  • The petrochemical chemical filters we blacklist - oxybenzone, octinoxate, homosalate, and octocrylene - flagged for measurable absorption into the body, possible hormone activity, and documented coral-reef harm.

A few we would point you to

These are independent brands that make well-regarded mineral sunscreens generally meeting the checklist above. We are not affiliated with any of them and earn nothing if you buy - they are simply clean options worth a look.

  • Attitude Mineral Sunscreen - non-nano zinc, fragrance-free, vegan and cruelty-free, EWG Verified. The closest match to our own standards.
  • ThinkSport / Thinkbaby SPF 50 - a high dose of non-nano zinc, fragrance-free, water-resistant, and easy to find. A great everyday and active-day option.
  • Vanicream Mineral Sunscreen - fragrance-free and built for sensitive skin, available at most drugstores if you want something simple and accessible.

Because sunscreen formulas change and vary by shade and SKU, always read the current label against the checklist above, and patch test any new product before daily use - exactly as you would with an active serum.

Independent recommendations, not paid placements. NuFountain has no affiliation with these brands, and we do not sell sunscreen. Reviewed July 2026.

How to use it

Sunscreen is the last step of your morning routine - after your serums and any moisturizer, and before makeup. Use enough to genuinely cover (most people apply far too little), and reapply through the day if you are outdoors. For where it fits with the rest of your actives, see Build Your Routine; for the evidence behind sun protection and every active we make, see The Research.
