Build Your Routine

Great skin is about the right order, not the most products. Here is how to layer your NuFountain actives, which combinations multiply results, which to keep apart, and simple routines to match your goal.

The core order

Apply from thinnest to richest, letting each step absorb. A complete routine flows like this:

  • 1. Cleanse with P01 WASH.
  • 2. Prep with P08 PRIME to refine and ready the skin.
  • 3. Treat with your active serum (Vitamin C, brightener, retinoid, peptides, or an exfoliant).
  • 4. Hydrate with H03 PLUMP, and calm if needed with H01 CALM.
  • 5. Seal a compromised barrier with H06 SEAL.
  • 6. Protect every morning with a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher. This is non-negotiable with active skincare.

The golden rules

  • Thinnest to thickest. Apply the most watery serums first and let each absorb before the next. Our formulas are water-light, so this takes seconds.
  • Acids and retinoids at night. They can raise sun sensitivity and do their best work while skin repairs overnight.
  • Antioxidants in the morning. Vitamin C and its network defend against daytime UV and pollution, so they earn their place in your AM routine.
  • Introduce one active at a time. Give skin a week or two to adjust before adding another, so you know what agrees with you.
  • Always finish with hydration, and SPF by day. Sealing humectants in is what makes them draw moisture into the skin rather than out of it.

Pairings that multiply

Some combinations give you more than the sum of their parts:

Vitamin C, vitamin E, and ferulic acid. This antioxidant network regenerates itself and roughly doubles the sun protection any one gives alone. It is why our Vitamin C serums are built around this trio.
Any strong active plus hydration or soothing. Pairing an acid, retinoid, or high-dose Vitamin C with a humectant and a calming agent keeps potency comfortable - the results without the sting.
Exfoliate, then hydrate. An acid clears the dead surface cells that block absorption, so the hydrators that follow sink into fresh skin and work harder.
A retinoid at night with barrier repair. Skin-identical lipids like ceramides and squalane offset the dryness a retinoid can cause, so you get renewal with far less peeling. See the Hydration & Barrier serums.
Vitamin C in the morning, a retinoid at night. The classic anti-aging pairing, split across the day: antioxidant defense while you are exposed, cell renewal while you sleep.
Niacinamide with almost anything. It works at a neutral pH, so it sits comfortably alongside acids, Vitamin C, or retinoids while supporting the barrier.

What not to mix in the same routine

A few combinations cancel each other out or raise the risk of irritation. Keep these apart by using one in the morning and one at night, or by alternating nights:

Keep apart Why What to do
Copper Peptides (V12 FORGE) with L-Ascorbic Acid or strong acids Low pH destabilizes copper peptides Vitamin C in the AM, V12 FORGE in the PM
Retinoid (V15 SHIFT) with leave-on AHA/BHA (V20 PEEL, V17 QUELL) Together they overwhelm the barrier Use on alternate nights
Two or more leave-on acids together Over-exfoliation and barrier damage Choose one exfoliant per routine

And two things you will hear that are not true: you do not need to keep niacinamide away from Vitamin C - that myth traces to decades-old tests on impure material - and layering two different Vitamin C products will not double the benefit, so pick the one that suits your skin.

Routines by goal

Brighten and fade dark spots

AM: cleanse, prep, a Vitamin C such as C20 FADE or gentle M10 BLOOM, then H03 PLUMP and SPF. PM: add V09 ERASE for targeted, non-acidic brightening. Ready-made: Dark Spot Trio.

Smooth fine lines and firm

PM: cleanse, prep, then the retinoid V15 SHIFT or pregnancy-friendly V02 BLUR, followed by H03 PLUMP. Alternate nights with V12 FORGE or V04 FIRM for peptides. Always SPF in the AM. Ready-made: Firm & Lift or the Age-Defense System.

Clear congestion and blemishes

AM: cleanse, prep, S05 CLEAR, hydrate, SPF. PM: V17 QUELL to refine the look of pores, with V20 PEEL one to three nights a week. Ready-made: Clear Skin.

Calm and repair the barrier

Keep it gentle: cleanse, H03 PLUMP, H01 CALM, and H06 SEAL. Reintroduce actives slowly once skin feels comfortable again. Ready-made: Barrier Rescue.

The minimalist

Three steps: cleanse with P01 WASH, one Vitamin C or treatment serum, and H03 PLUMP, plus SPF each morning. Ready-made: The Essentials.

How often to use actives

  • Vitamin C and hydration: daily, morning and or evening.
  • Retinoid (V15 SHIFT): start two nights a week, build up as tolerated.
  • Leave-on peel (V20 PEEL): one to three nights a week, never with the retinoid the same night.
  • Peptides (V12 FORGE, V04 FIRM): daily, but not alongside acids or Vitamin C in the same routine.

A note on pregnancy

Retinoids are generally avoided during pregnancy and nursing, so skip V15 SHIFT during this time. V02 BLUR uses plant-based Bakuchiol as a retinol-free alternative many prefer. This is general guidance, not medical advice; always confirm with your physician.
