L-ascorbic acid serums, often referred to a "Vitamin C Serums," are perishable and need proper care. Over time, depending on how you store your serum, it may turn a dark color (amber, dark amber, or brown) or develop a foul hot dog or bacon odor. Proper storage keeps your serums fresh and effective!
Best Ways to Keep Serums Fresh:
1: Only open the bottle to dispense drops from the dropper onto your palm. Put the dropper back into the bottle as soon as you can to minimize exposure to air as described next.
2: Once you've put serum into your palm, place the dropper above the serum bottle opening. Squeeze it first to expel the the serum left in the dropper back into the bottle, then still squeezing the dropper, insert in bottle and pull up serum in the bottle and fill the dropper. Immediately put the dropper in the bottle and tighten the cap. This keeps the dropper from forcing air into the serum if accidentally squeezed.
3: The ideal storage temperature is around 50-60 degrees. For most situations, that is a hard temperature to find in your house unless you have a wine cooler. To keep your serum fresh longest, we suggest you store unopened and the bottle in-use in the fridge. Always store unopened bottles in the refrigerator.
Never leave the serum bottle open, exposed to sunlight or where it is hot. They like dark, cool places best.
Sometimes it's a long walk to the fridge, and your bottle in-use will do well in a cool, dark area if yu don't wish to keep in in the refrigerator.
A single bottle typically is used in about 3-4 weeks. The serum should remain fresh if you follow the suggestions above. Remember, protect your skin from all areas it exposed to the Sun! Your neck, upper chest, arms, hands, ankles, and feet if you wear sandals. A single bottle used in all those places goes fast and protects your skin.
Application:
Simple exfoliation is a key component and helps ensure the absorption of your new serum. Gentle physical exfoliation is very important. Harsh, chemical or grainy abrasive exfoliates can actually harm your skin and cause redness, irritation and uneven skin tone.
After gentle exfoliation and proper cleansing, you’re ready to apply NuFountain serums. If you use a toner (cotton pad application) after cleansing, you’ll want to use if before serum application. Using a toner afterwards could remove the serum you’ve applied.
If you’ll be applying a moisturizer, sunscreen or makeup, be sure to allow the serum to dry, waiting a few minutes for the serum to be absorbed into the skin.
Now You Are Ready To Apply C20:
Using the dropper, dispense just a few drops (4-5 to start) into your cupped palm (think of your palm as a small bowl) and using your other hand, dip your fingertips into your palm then apply the serum to desired areas. Even better, slightly open your cupped palm and pat your other palm into the liquid, then using both palms pat the desired area quickly and evenly over the desired area. Experimenting can be fun and soon you’ll find what works best for you.
Applied properly, your skin should never be wet. At most, it should be moist or slightly damp. Too much serum will irritate your skin and be repelled. Your skin only needs the slightest amount -- never too much.
If you’re using more than one serum, just follow the guidelines above and make sure you aren’t removing any serum with your method of application such as using a cotton pad to apply a second serum and thereby removing the first one you’ve applied.
It’s that simple!
Something You Must Always Do!
Use a physical sunblock. Use one that contains an ingredient such as Zinc Oxide. Chemical formulations are no match for physical sunblock no matter what the label claims. The best way to keep your skin healthy is to not damage it. UV exposure from the sun causes free-radicals (oxygen cells in your dermal layer which have gone wild and are attacking other cells with clubs and bats) which harms your skin. L-ascorbic acid repairs free radical damage and boosts collagen production. Do both and you'll have it made-in-the-shade (remember, even in the shade there is UV hitting you).
Things You Must Never Do!
Never apply anything before C20 serum! Our serums need completely washed, clean skin with nothing on it. The very first thing you do after cleansing is apply the serum. It needs to penetrate into your dermal layer and anything applied before that will block it from absorbing properly. C20 first. Everything else after.
L-ascorbic acid serums need to have a very low pH (about 2.5) to work. Most any other product you may use has a much higher pH level (probably around 8). Never MIX our serums together with other products to make applying it all at one time. Mixing serum with anything else will change the pH of of the serum and render it useless. Wash, apply serum, then other products. Follow that routine and your skin will thank you by looking beautiful!
Never give up. A lifetime of UV/sun exposure causes free-radical damage which simply can not be fixed in a day, or a week, or even a month. It takes at least 8 weeks for healthy new skin cells to reach your top dermal layer as the 20 or so old layers of damaged skin above them exfoliate off. That's why exfoliation is so important. Our serums will promote healthy new skin cells. With twice-daily application, in about two months you will look at yourself and be amazed and understand that the wait was worth it.
Finally, never stop use. Once your see how L-ascorbic acid corrects damaged skin, remember exposure to the sun never stops, so it makes sense to never stop use of the serum. It's a never-ending battle and with ongoing use, you will win the war with great looking skin.
It's so easy! Before applying C20 serum, wash face and body and apply C20 before any other products.
